DAY 5: Evolution, artificial hormones and cow eggs

The halfway point

Week 1 may nearly be over, but we have the evictions to look forward to next week! The power is in the hands of the 5,000+ students.

Today’s highlights in the Reproduction Zone:

  • The effect of medical research on human evolution:

laralukfenn33 : is it possible that w can evolute so much that it will effect our bodys in a bad way

michelletaylor : That’s a good question – some people think that because of medical research we are gathering mutations in our genome that we have been lost from the population. So for example, without antibiotics, people who had a bacterial infection may have died before they had children, but people who survived the infection and had a good immune system passed that good thing onto their children.

  • Artificial hormones:

What would you do if someone didn’t have one of the hormones needed for reproduction?

  • And how cow eggs are used for human cloning:

69naz69 :  what happen if a human crossbreeded with another animal

michelletaylor : Humans cannot crossbreed with another species at the moment. You may have heard about cow eggs being using for human cloning – the cow egg is simply an empty cell and all the DNA will be from a human. Organisms are usually so complex that crossbreeding is very rare as chromosomes do not match and they do not develop properly
