The baby is contained in a sac of protective fluid which helps protect the baby from knocks or bumps. This sac will normally rupture when the baby is ready to be born, and all the fluid that surrounds the baby will come out.

They break because the sac surrounding the baby tears and rips open, sometimes a lot of liquid will come out at once! But this sac has to break for the baby to be able to come out.
