How animals choose their mates and raise their offspring is fascinating to me because there are an enormous number of ways to do it. Some species lay eggs in nests in trees, some in a hole in the ground, some animals produce live young and then keep them in pouches and some give birth to live young that can get up and run around almost immediately. Understanding how animals live and reproduce the way they do is often a combination of evolutionary history (where they’ve come from) and their local ecology (how much food or predators are in their environment). I really love to work out which things are causing animals to behave the way they do.
