The sky is blue because the light coming from the sun is split into many different colours when it hits our atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.

This is because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun better than they scatter red light.

I can’t really add anything more to what other people have said, although the direction of light makes the sky blue as well, as the sun is overhead. The sun when it sets has to penetrate more of the atmosphere and this means more red light is scattered meaning only reds remain.
