I don’t use music directly in my research, but some of my colleagues are doing research into the songs that male crickets produce to attract a mate – they record the sounds and then play them back to females to see which ones they like the most.

Do you mean I listen to music or do I do science experiments with music?

I have my phone with me all the time in the lab so I can listen to music, it helps me to think and passes the day away quickly. Maybe music would make cells grow differently but I have never tried it!

In my lab there is always music. I really like to work with music, because it’s more fun, especially if you are alone in the lab. And the rest of the people in the lab also like it. The only problem is that everybody in the lab has to agree with the music we want to play, which sometimes might be quite difficult!

Some of my students did experiments with music. They tried different types of music to see if it affected the heart rate of people. Music is used in therapy and it is thought it could relax people by affecting their moods through things such as brain waves or heart rate.

I don’t do experiment with music but I listen to music even when am working in the lab because it makes me more relaxed and makes the work interesting. It’s like cooking at home and listening to good music.
