It was a number of things really. I think for a start, I had a great biology teacher who I’ll never forget. He was a very inspiring man.

I also found that out of all the subjects I studied at school, I found science and art the most inspiring. I decided to study science after my GCSEs because I felt it would lead towards work that I really wanted to do. I decided to leave my previous job and go back to do a PhD because I was fascinated by current research and really wanted to be a part of it .

I was always a bit of a puzzle-crazy kid – particularly the logic ones where you were given a set of clues and had to work out from that alone who did what and where and why! I guess I was naturally drawn towards asking questions and answering them.

The fact that you are doing something that nobody else has ever done; that you are helping to understand how we work, and how we can find a treatment against some of the diseases that we suffer; and the fact that science is exciting, challenging and different every day. These things inspired me to become a scientist.
