The baby has a blood sugar level directly like that of the mother. So if the mother has a high blood sugar, the baby will have one as well.

The baby responds to blood sugar as it needs to, so will produce more insulin when blood sugars are high and will produce less when blood sugars are low. Any amount of blood sugar will be affected by insulin levels and be reduced.
